SPANISH LANGUAGE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES The Office of Enrichment Programs/Division of Service Learning offers several opportunities for students to learn Spanish and medical Spanish, both in Boston and internationally, in the context of carrying out quality community service projects or clinical electives. Over 80 students can participate in these options, ranging from beginning Spanish to advanced levels of training in medical Spanish. Because we believe an immersion experience is the best way to quickly acquire a language and increase one’s cultural competence, the OEP/DSL offers an international immersion experience in Costa Rica. This language-learning opportunity is connected to service so that students can contribute their health-related skills to a local community while they also have opportunities to practice their Spanish. For those who can’t travel abroad, we have a medical Spanish course offered in Boston in the summer during the August elective month. Funding is available from the OEP/DSL to support the time the student spends carrying out their international community service projects and to help defray the travel expenses to Latin American sites where we offer language training. Students participating in certain clinical electives in Latin America are also eligible for some funding to defray roundtrip airfare. NOTE: First year MD/PHD students funded by the NIH Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) are usually not eligible for this opportunity. MSTP students should check with Linda Burnley, Director of Administration and Finance for the MD-PHD Program. The OEP also offers some financial support to HMS students participating in the following international clinical electives at Spanish-language speaking sites:
